28 november Kevin Rudd, Fresh Leader, Better Future??
There are certain things that Australian people care in particular. First of all, whether Australia is going to continue its extraordinary economy growth is among the top priority of the new government’s agenda. During recent years, we have seen an approximate 4% increase in GDP each year, as a result Australian people have been experiencing blossom in real estate market, remarkably low unemployment rate, and great business opportunity in Asia. All that factors push Australian per capita GDP to $32,900(American dollar) a record high. The question arises whether the successor of Liberal party can keep up the good work. In order to address this issue, two key questions need to be answered in the first place. Whether the Australian economy is heading towards the right direction is the chief issue. Despite the fact that our economy is going well, the truth is the main contribution of the growth has been coming from the mining industry. As known to all, when an economy is heavily depending on one or a few industries it would not be regarded as a healthy one. The reasons for Australia, in particular, are as the follows: There are two scenarios likely to happen. Firstly, the world still largely relies on our energy supply but on some future date our mineral deposit is exhausted. Then subsequently the main driver of our economy will be vanished. Further, even though we might still have our large mineral deposit, but countries like USA or China advance their technology to such extend that they find an alternative as energy supply. For example, China is able to manager generate electricity out of He3 which they get from the moon and this is what its outer space project is aiming for. Then our energy like uranium will be not longer sought after by the world. Our economy is going to lose again. Based on above analysis, Australian economy is not fundamentally heading to the right direction. Hopefully, Kevin Rudd has addressed this issue in his competition of running for the primer. The second issue which intertwines with the first one is Mr. Rudd’s capability to conduct Australian economy toward the right direction and better serve the national interest. According to Mr. Rudd’s profile, he spent nearly all his career before being elected as prime minister as a professional diplomatist. This gives raise a serious issue in relation to if the new primer and his party is able to run the economy as they planned since the last time labor ruled this country was 1985. Apart from the issue in transition of economy, Mr. Rudd’s ability and determination to forge a tighter link with Pacific Asia are also being widely discussed. Some people believe that the affinity for this area that the new Primer has shown will further elevate the friendship between the countries in this area and China in particular. On the contrary, some oppose that Mr. Rudd’s personal strength of speaking mandarin will not fundamentally change Australian foreign affair policy for the fear of losing its traditional ally the United States. It is, therefore, best to assume that in this regard it makes on difference whether John Howard or Kevin Rudd is in power, as their priority is to defend Australian national interest.
